Group Process Facilitation

"How do I get this group to work better together?"

This common refrain is a prelude to many consulting engagements and signals a need in the area of process work for a group. The role of group process facilitator is much different than the consulting role, and when a client presents process concerns, such as the refrain above, the helping role must shift in a new direction.

While a consultant provides expertise on any number of areas, and may present ideas to a group, when it is time to discuss those ideas, the consultant as facilitator adopts a neutral position relative to group dynamics and helps the group with a framework and structure to process the ideas and formulate intentions, goals, steps forward, or whatever the group determines is necessary.

The truth is, group work is often thwarted by old habits and patterns that interfere with progress. For this reason, sometimes the best ideas put forward by a group or individuals are lost, and conflict and tension dominate the gathering. In this case, a consultant intervention is not needed. Rather, someone skilled in tapping the internal resources of the group with a focus on group process will produce greater chances of success.
